My Visit To
Poland

October 4, 1999: Warsaw
Bohaterow Getta (Ghetto Heroes Street) 1600x1200 (395 KB)

"This short stretch of the road paved with cobblestones and the remains of tram rails is a fragment of a pre-war street from the Jewish district of Nalewki. It used to vibrate with life. It ran irregularly, had many curves, sudden turns, and side alleys. It was a street of trade and city chic, but most of all – hard work during the days and nights in various factories and workshops, both legal and more shady in all areas of human activity.

"The list of haberdashery workshops in Nalewki in 1938 included over 99 companies. There was everything there... and a little bit more – as the street's inhabitant's used to say." -- A Guide to Jewish Warsaw (©1996 Our Roots. All rights reserved.)
