My Visit To
Poland

October 9, 1999: Krakow
Chaim Hilfstein Hebrew Gymnasium 1600x1200 (158 KB)

From 1904 to 1939, this building housed a Jewish gymnasium (high school).

"The language of instruction was Polish, but students also learned Greek, Latin, German, and Hebrew. Though the attitude toward Judaism was progressive, students were required to spend ten hours a week studying Judaic subjects such as the Bible, Hebrew literature, and the history of the Jews." -- Newsletter of the American Association for Polish-Jewish Studies, Spring 2005.
