My Visit To
Poland

October 9, 1999: Krakow
Ajzek Synagogue 1200x1600 (144 KB)

The Ajzek Synagogue, an imposing structure, was built early in the 17th century. It had an opulent interior, purposely hidden behind a bland exterior. It was renovated in 1857 and again in 1924, but the Nazis stripped it to its bare walls. After the war, there were plans to turn the building into a church, but those plans fell through, and the Ajzek Synagogue fell deeper into disrepair. The exterior of the building was restored in the 1980's, but I don't believe that the structure is in use for any purpose at this time.
