My Visit To
Poland

October 9, 1999: Krakow
Old Synagogue 1600x1200 (395 KB)

The appropriately named "Old Synagogue" is the oldest surviving Jewish religious building not only in Krakow but in all of Poland. I've been told that it's a beautiful and imposing structure – but unfortunately it seems to be in the midst of some extensive exterior restoration work, it's surrounded by scaffolding and is nearly invisible.

"In the rooms on the first floor, atop the synagogue porch, is an exposition presenting the Jewish district in Kasimierz in the 19th and 20th centuries and the fate of the Cracow Jews during the period of Nazi occupation in 1939-1945. But it is not the exhibits which make the biggest impression when one enters the Old Synagogue. What is striking above all is the beauty of the architecture of the high hall covered with late Gothic sexpartite vault ribbing supported by two slender columns." -- A Guide to Jewish Cracow (©1992 Our Roots.
