October 6, 1999: Bialystok to Suwalki |
|
I'm in luck Patrick Fox, one of the people I'm here to see, is in (and he tells me that Dorota Campfield will be home soon). He takes us up a flight of stairs to living quarters on the second floor. He tells me a little about the school, which was founded by Dorota, a native Polish woman who is the widow of a British IBM executive (hence the un-Polish last name). Patrick, a Brit himself, originally came to the school as a teacher, and has stayed on to run the school with Dorota. He tells me that, with the demise of Communism, English has replaced Russian as the second-language-of-choice in Poland, so the school is doing well. Patrick also tells me that he knows people in Augustow who have done some research about the former Jewish presence here. Personally, I have no known ancestors from Augustow, but Patrick offers to let me post his email address so he can assist others searching for their Jewish roots here. If you'd like to take Patrick up on his generous offer, you can contact him at hpkfox@hotmail.com. Note (September 12 2001): As I mentioned on the previous page, Patrick and Dorota are no longer associated with the Campfield School. However, I've remained in touch with Patrick, who tells me that he continues to welcome email from people researching their Jewish roots in the area, he may be able to provide helpful information and useful contacts. |
