Mila 18 Bunker Memorial 1600x1200 (669 KB)

"...on the site of the Mila 18 Bunker stands a high grave mound. (Its height shows the level of rubble from the destroyed Jewish district.) Here was the HQ of the Jewish Fighting Organization (Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa – ZOB). Commanders' briefings were conducted here, and reports were received. The Nazi command wanted to trace and destroy that bunker at any price. At last on 8 May they managed to locate it. The bunker was surrounded on all sides and a full-scale attack began. Gas bombs were thrown in.

"The defenders decided to commit suicide. The first to do so was Lejb Rotblat, but not before shooting his own mother. Anielewicz, his wife, Fonaminski, and Wilner killed themselves. A new exit was found, thus saving some fighters, including Michal Rojzenfeld and Tosia Altman. Led out of the Ghetto by Gwardia Ludowa they found their death later, taking part in the partisan struggle." -- A Guide to Jewish Warsaw (©1996 Our Roots. All rights reserved.)
