Poland

October 4, 1999: Warsaw
Szmul Zygielbojm Memorial 1600x1200 (727 KB)

Szmul Zygielbojm was one of the organizers of the Jewish Underground in Warsaw during the German occupation. Leaving Poland in 1939 to escape arrest, he traveled to Belgium and New York, eventually ending up in London as a member of the National Council of the Polish Government-in-Exile. He devoted himself to publicizing the plight of Polish Jews at the hands of the Nazis, but became frustrated by his feeling that much of the world did not believe that genocide was actually taking place. "As a final protest against the Nazi atrocities and the world's indifference to the murder of the Jews, Szmul Zygielbojm committed suicide on May 12, 1943." (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum)
