This high-rise office building stands on the site of the Great Synagogue. Completed in 1878 and destroyed in 1943, it held 3,000 people and was the largest synagogue in Warsaw. According to local legend, a rabbi put a curse on the site when the Great Synagogue was destroyed; as a result, this office building, begun in the early 1960's, was beset by constant construction problems, and was not completed until 1993 (after the "curse" was lifted). Here's an old photo of the synagogue, courtesy of Robert Tachna. |
