When we leave the Civil Records Office, George drives the few blocks to the cemetery – but even though a persistent light rain is falling, I decide to walk. I assume that the area between the site of the synagogue and the cemetery was once inhabited by Jews, so it occurs to me that the houses I'm passing may have been owned by Jewish families (relatives of mine, quite possibly) before the war.
