October 7, 1999: Suwalki to Warsaw |
|
The Civil Records Office staffers seem to be scurrying around trying to locate things that will help us, and after a while they find and unfold this map. The finger at the top of the map shows where we are now, at the southwest corner of the town square. The other finger points to a green area that represents the Przerosl Jewish Cemetery. I assume that I have ancestors and cousins buried in the cemetery, but I've heard that most of the existing Jewish cemeteries in Poland are in poor condition. The International Jewish Cemetery Project describes the Przerosl Jewish Cemetery as having "no current care" and says that "vegetation is a moderate threat," which sounds a little discouraging but also a little hopeful. |
