October 7, 1999: Suwalki to Warsaw |
|
As we've driven through the Polish countryside, I've noticed that, unlike the large herds of cows I'm used to seeing near my home in Texas, the typical farmers in Poland (or, at least, in this part of the country) each seem to have only one or two cows. And unlike the huge, fenced-in ranges in Texas, I've seen few fences here instead, the farmers walk their cows out to the fields in the morning and lead them back into the barns at night. To ensure that the cows don't amble off, the farmers chain them to stakes that they pound into the ground. And to make doubly sure that the cows won't make a dash for freedom, many of the farmers hobble them by chaining their front legs together (and sometimes their back legs as well) so that they can't move very quickly. Although this photo is not very clear, perhaps you can spot some of the chains. |
