Vincenty Witos 480x640 (48 KB)

"...but Poland shall last forever. Vincenty Witos, 1874-1945" (Translation courtesy of Gennady Kulikov.)

This statue of Vincenty Witos dominates the square that bears his name, just across the street from the Sheraton Warsaw. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, Witos served three terms as prime minister of Poland between 1920 and 1926. He was a political prisoner in Poland during the 1930's, and was imprisoned by both the Germans and the Russians at various times during World War II. Witos died in Krakow shortly after the end of the war.
